West Highland Way - Marsh

West Highland Way - Marsh

by: Terry Marsh
The West Highland Way is one of Britain's finest walks, capturing the wild beauty of western Scotland as it passes through a landscape of both rich diversity and cultural heritage. The route begins in the lowlands north of Milngavie, then crosses the Highland Boundary Fault line into the rugged scenery of Loch Lomond, Glen Falloch and Strath Fillan. The route then crosses Rannoch Moor to the edges of Glen Coe and the head of Loch Leven, up into the hidden glen of Lairig Mor before an exhilarating descent to Fort William.

The 95-mile walk, which takes roughly one week to complete, is described in seven stages, with each stage ranging from 8 to 20 miles, with suggested itineraries of 6 and 9 days. The guide details the 'classic' south-north direction but also provides a summary description for those wanting to walk the route in the opposite direction.

Detailed route finding instructions plus a separate map booklet showing the entire route at 1:25000 scale with the route highlighted ensure safe and easy navigation. There is also full colour 1:100000 scale maps giving an overview of each section. The book includes a trek planner with an accommodation guide, list of facilities and public transport. All the practical information required for planning and walking the route is provided in a comprehensive introductory section and useful contacts and accommodation information is provided in appendices. The book is illustrated with plenty of colour photographs throughout.

The seven day sections are as follows:
Stage 1 Milngavie to Drymen - 12.5 miles
Stage 2 Drymen to Rowardennan - 15 miles
Stage 3 Rowardennan to Crianlarich - 20 miles
Stage 4 Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy - 13.25 miles
Stage 5 Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse - 12 miles
