Walks in the Midlands Countryside

This guidebook is a collection of 20 walks in the attractive countryside of the West Midlands that surrounds the built-up area of Birmingham and the Black Country, extending over parts of rural Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. The inspiration for it is a uniquely fascinating book called 'Walks in the Black Country and the Green Borderland' written in 1868 by Elihu Burritt the American consul to Birmingham at the time. The aim of the book is to revisit most of the areas of the 'green borderland' that Burritt visited seeing how much has changed since his time.

Each walk chapter begins with an overview of its features and a table giving practical information including distance, approximate time, start location details and parking, terrain, refreshment facilities, public transport information if available, and OS Explorer map sheet number. There are concise route-finding instructions and a clear sketch map. There are also background notes and comparisons with Burritt's descriptions of places visited. The book is illustrated with black and white photographs.
