On the coast, adjoining the Menai Strait separating the mainland from Anglesey, are two important historic settlements. One is the small cathedral and University City of Bangor and the other is Caernarfon, a fortified walled town of Roman origins, with an impressive late 13th century castle, a designated World Heritage Site.

The 22 walks in this book explore the area's varied landscape and fascinating history. There are town trails, walks by the Menai Strait, through woodland and river valleys, across foothills offering panoramic views, past quarries and through a complex pattern of enclosed fields. Some follow old miners' paths and sections of former railways, now surfaced recreational trails such as Lon Las Ogwen and Lon Eifion.

The walks vary in length between 1.5 and 7 miles. Each walk entry begins with a short overview description giving an indication of difficulty and features plus the starting point including grid reference. Detailed route finding instructions follow in numbered paragraphs relating to numbered points on an associated sketch map. A summary chart gives grade, time, links with other walks and main features.
