Walking in Northumberland

Walking in Northumberland

by: Vivienne Crow
Northumberland and its national park have much to offer, from the beautiful coast with its immense empty beaches and dramatic crag-top castles to the remote hills of the Cheviots and Pennines and everything in between. Echoes of the region's often turbulent past include Hadrian's Wall, Lindisfarne Priory, Dunstanburgh Castle, Iron Age forts and mysterious prehistoric rock art.

There are excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, from seals and puffins on the coast to increasingly rare moorland birds and even feral goats in the Cheviot Hills.

This comprehensive guide book contains 36 contrasting day walks which range from 4 to 14 miles with no technical difficulties. The book begins with an informative introduction to Northumberland including weather, geology, wildlife and habitats, history, where to stay, public transport and other practical information. Each of the walks begins with a panel giving start location with grid reference, distance, overall ascent, grade, terrain, estimated time, OS map sheet numbers, public transport and facilities. There are clear route finding instructions supported by Ordnance Survey 1:50000 scale map extracts with the route highlighted. The text is interspersed with background information on features of interest and there are many excellent colour photographs to illustrate the text. The walk locations are:
