Walking Close to Thetford Forest Guidebook

Walking Close to Thetford Forest Guidebook

by: Clive Brown
One of a range of 'no frills' local walking guide booklets which admirably achieve their objective of getting you out in the countryside amongst beautiful scenery on carefully chosen routes full of interest. The directions are clear and precise and the pencil drawn sketch maps are particularly attractive as well as practical.

This guide describes ten walks within the Thetford Forest area, varying in length from 4 to 7 miles. Thetford Forest has its origins in the timber shortage following the First World War. The first trees were planted into the area known as Breckland, either side of the Norfolk/Suffolk border. A century ago the area was almost entirely a manmade heathland environment created by farming. Walking in Thetford Forest can sometimes give the impression of being transported to the location of a dark Bavarian fairy tale where the gingerbread cottage of 'Hansel and Gretel' will suddenly appear.

The walk locations are:
Santon Downham and Two Mile Bottom - 5.75 miles
Stonebridge and Illington Belt - 5 miles
Cranberry Rough near Stowbedon - 7 miles
Weeting and Pilgrim's Walk - 6.25 miles
Queen Mary's Avenue - 6.75 miles
Weeting and Mount Ephraim Plantation - 6.75 miles
Santon Downham, Brandon and the Little Ouse - 5.75 miles
Ingham and Cooper's Drift - 7.5 miles
Mundford and Zigzag Covert - 4.25 miles
Harling Drove - 5.25 miles
