Shropshire 40 Heritage and History Walks Guidebook

Shropshire 40 Heritage and History Walks Guidebook

author: Derek Houghton
Shropshire has long been regarded as a hidden gem, often overlooked by those heading for the bigger challenges found in the rugged hills of Wales and some way behind the popularity of the picturesque hotspots of England such as the Cotswolds and the Lake District. Regular visitors will tell you, however, that there are few better places for curious walkers. The 40 walks in this guidebook are spread all around the region, taking in hills and dales that are home to Bronze age stone circles, battle scarred castles and fine country houses and estates, and following the rivers and canals that brought pioneering engineers and ironmasters the raw materials needed to power the innovations which placed the county at the very centre of the Industrial Revolution.

Each walk entry begins with at-a-glance details of distance, time, terrain, parking and public transport access where available. Clear route-finding instructions are provided together with simple overview coloured sketch maps, but OS Explorer map sheet numbers are also provided. The text also includes brief notes on features of interest along the way and there are colour photographs throughout.

The walks are arranged into five geographical sections as follows:
North Shropshire
South Shropshire
Shrewsbury, Telford and Ironbridge
East Shropshire
West Shropshire
