Llyn Coastal Path Walking Guidebook

Llyn Coastal Path Walking Guidebook

by: Des Marshall
The Llyn Peninsula is 30 miles long and extends into the Irish Sea on the north side and into Cardigan Bay on the south side. The Peninsula was travelled by many pilgrims on their way to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) and some sections of the Coastal Path follow these ancient footsteps. The Llyn Coastal Path is one of the great walks of Britain.

A fit walker will be able to complete it in a week without much difficulty. Although a good percentage of the route is very well waymarked and finger posted there are, however, sections that are not marked at all. The first 17.25 miles from Caernarfon to Trefor are mostly completed on road, the next 62.25 miles to Pwllheli follows a rugged coastline. The remaining 17.25 miles to Porthmadog are alongside, or on, beaches interspersed by short sections of road walking, making a total of almost 97 miles for the walk as described in this book.

The book begins with a short informative introduction to the Llyn Peninsula. The route is described in seven day-walk chapters each with concise route finding instructions in numbered paragraphs plus a sketch map also showing the paragraph numbers for easy navigation. The instructions are interspersed with italic text giving information about points of interest along the way. Some practical information including public transport is provided at the end of the book.

The seven day stages are as follows:
Caernarfon to Clynnog Fawr - 14 miles
Clynnog Fawr to Porth Dinllaen - 14 miles
Porth Dinllaen to Whistling Sands - 14.75 miles
Whistling Sands to Aberdaron - 8.25 miles
Aberdaron to Trwyn yr Wylfa - 6.5 miles
Trwyn yr Wylfa to Pwllheli - 12 miles
Pwllheli to Porthmadog - 17.25 miles
