Let's Walk the North York Moors Western Area Guidebook

Let's Walk the North York Moors Western Area Guidebook

author: Stephen Robinson
This guidebook explores the western area of the North York Moors National Park. The routes incorporate a tremendous variety of scenery including wild heather moorland, lush riverside meadows, and wooded valleys. The routes provide a superb introduction to the area's stunning landscape. This excellent guide provides superb full colour maps with numbered arrow pointers to identify the current position along the route. There are route directions with grid references beside each map to aid navigation, plus background information for each of the ten circular walks.

The western area of the North York Moors National Park incorporates the plateaux of The Cleveland Hills and the Hambleton Hills, which rise dramatically to form an imposing natural boundary. These well-known hills, traversed by the Cleveland Way en route to the North Sea coastline at Saltburn, showcase many miles of Spectacular scenery. They also boast some of the highest hills in the North York Moors, rising to 1490 feet (454m) at Round Hill on Urra Moor, the highest point in the National Park.

In addition to its beautiful scenery the western area has many historic landmarks and attractive villages including;
Kilburn's White Horse, visible from 30 miles away.
Shandy Hall at Coxwold where Laurence Sterne wrote Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey.
Newburgh Priory, where Oliver Cromwell's body is said to be walled up in a tomb above the porch.
Hemsley, an ancient market town, whose might medieval castle was besieged during the civil war.
