This guidebook explores the northern area of the North York Moors National Park. The routes incorporate a tremendous variety of scenery including wild heather moorland, lush riverside meadows, and wooded valleys. The routes provide a superb introduction to the area's stunning landscape. This excellent guide provides superb full colour maps with numbered arrow pointers to identify the current position along the route. There are route directions with grid references beside each map to aid navigation, plus background information for each of the ten circular walks

The area covered extends from Great Ayton in the west, north past Guisborough, and east along the Esk Valley. The highest moorland areas lie to the south, divided west to east by Esk Dale and separated by a series of scenic tributary dales, which join the river Esk's primary valley as it flows into the North Sea at Whitby.

The Esk's tributaries include Westerdale, regarded as the head of Esk Dale, Danby Dale, the Fryup Dales, Glaisdale and the valleys of the Murk Esk and Littlbeck. All these dales are modest in length, with only that of the Murk Esk containing a sizeable village. However, the main valley has a string of enchanting villages sited along its length, many acting as gateways to the side valleys. The northern area has modest forestry covering, mainly to the west above Guiseborough. In contrast heather and ling clothe the moors, while field boundaries, meadows and dry- stone walls distinguish the dales. Esk Dale has many opportunities for walkers, from leisurely rambles to challenging moorland treks,
