Let's Walk Lower Teesdale Guidebook

Let's Walk Lower Teesdale Guidebook

author: Stephen Robinson
The walks described in this guidebook explore the North Pennines National Landscape, well known for its diversity of wildlife and scenic excellence. The walks focus on Lower Teesdale below Romaldkirk and include the Greta and Gaunless Valleys. The North Pennines National Landscape is also designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, one of England's most special places. Visitors often overlook the pastoral aspects of Lower Teesdale and head directly to the upper dale above Barnard Castle. However, Lower Teesdale deserves a more intimate exploration as described in the walks in this guidebook. The routes comprise a variety of habitats: heather moorland, rough pasture, flower-rich hay meadows and stunning river and woodland scenery.

This excellent guide is packed with stunning colour photographs and superb full colour maps with numbered arrow pointers to identify the current position along the route. There are route directions with grid references beside each map to aid navigation, plus background information for each of the ten circular walks.

Sir Walter Scott was a frequent visitor to Lower Teesdale and the 'Meeting of the Waters' inspired him to write 'The two most beautiful and rapid rivers of the north, Greta and Tees join current in the demesne'. Landscape artists, including J.M.W. Turner and John SnellCotman, captured the beauty of the Tees and Greta during their many visits.
