Howgills and Limestone Trail Walking guidebook

Howgills and Limestone Trail Walking guidebook

by: David and Heather Pitt
David & Heather Pitt, who re-created Alfred Wainwright s famous 1938 Pennine Journey, with maps by Ron Scholes and illustrations by Colin Bywater, here describe a new 76-mile long-distance walk from Kirkby Stephen to Settle. This pictorial guide follows a route through this picturesque and, in parts, demanding area of Cumbria and North Yorkshire, with a short diversion into Lancashire. Based on Wainwright's 'Wainwright's Walks in Limestone Country' and 'Walks in the Howgill Fells' it can be linked with the final stages of the 'Pennine Journey' from Kirkby Stephen to Settle to form a 134 mile circular route.

The Howgills and Limestone Trail has strong associations with railways. It passes over the spectacular Smardale Gill viaduct, and close to the Stainmore Railway, the disused Ingleton and Tebay Railway, and the Settle to Carlisle railway.
The route passes through Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ingleton, Barbon, Sedbergh and across the Howgill Fells to Ravenstonedale and Kirkby Stephen. The book provides a detailed route description as well as clear sketch maps and illustrations.
