East Highland Way

East Highland Way Walking Guidebook

East Highland Way Walking Guidebook

by: Kevin Langan
The East Highland Way was developed by Kevin Langan in 2007 and this book is the latest edition of his detailed and descriptive walking guide to the route.

Beginning in Fort William and culminating in Aviemore, the trail forms an 82-mile link route between the northern end of the West Highland Way and the southern end of the Speyside Way. In addition, the route also connects with the Great Glen Way at its southern point in Fort William, making this trek a rewarding challenge for seasoned distance walkers and amateurs alike.

Not simply an illustrated route description, Langan's guide also details the plethora of wildlife to be spotted and explores the sites of historic interest along the way in each section of the walk. The book is packed with colour photographs on almost every page illustrating the wildlife and places along the way. The comprehensive introductory section provides all the practical information required to plan the walk including overnight accommodation locations and facilities.

The guide breaks the route into seven sections. At the beginning of each section a fact box gives distance, a terrain summary, refreshment options, attractions and accommodation options. A height profile map of the route is also provided. The navigation instructions which follow are clear and are supported by colour sketch maps showing the route. The book also provides the OS Explorer map sheet numbers.

The route sections are as follows:
Fort William to Spean Bridge - 11.8 miles
Spean Bridge to Inverlair - 9.6 miles
Inverlair to Feagour - 21 miles
Feagour to Laggan - 5 miles
Laggan to Newtonmore - 9.1 miles
Newtonmore to Kincraig - 15.4 miles
Kincraig to Aviemore - 10.5 miles
