A Dales High Way Walking Companion

A Dales High Way Walking Companion

by: Tony and Chris Grogan
This book compliments the Dales High Way Route Guide and is best read alongside it. This is your guide and companion on an exhilarating 90 mile walk across the glorious high country of the Yorkshire Dales. Walk this dramatic landscape from Saltaire to Appleby-in-Westmoreland. Explore its rich history, geology, wildlife and culture, then return with a breathtaking train ride along England's most beautiful railway. This book is a companion to the Dales High Way Route Guide and the numbered reference points on the Route Guide's colourful strip maps are reflected in the paragraph numbers in this book.

Walking the Dales High Way is a journey through place and time and this Companion book describes the story of that journey, expanding upon the information in the Route Guide (which provides the detailed description of the route with the appropriate OS maps). This book adds to the Route Guide by bringing your surroundings to life during your journey. It explores the fascinating geology, history, culture and wildlife of the places visited. It is designed to help you get the maximum enjoyment from your walk, whether it's finding rock art carved by our Stone Age ancestors, spotting an early purple orchid or visiting the best preserved medieval castle in England. The book has plenty of colour illustrations and diagrams to support the knowledgeable text.

The route itself divides naturally into six sections:
Rombalds Moor, Saltaire to Skipton - 17.9 miles
Malhamdale, Skipton to Settle - 18.7 miles
Ingleborough, Settle to Chapel-le-Dale - 14.2 miles
Dentdale, Chapel-le-Dale to Sedbergh - 15.7 miles
The Howgill Fells, Sedbergh to Newbiggin-on-Lune - 10.9 miles
The Eden Valley, Newbiggin-om-Lune to Appleby - 12.7 miles
