50 Walks in the Lake District Guidebook

50 Walks in the Lake District Guidebook

updated by: Jon Sparks and Vivienne Crow
The Lake District occupies most of central, southern and western Cumbria, one of England's largest counties. At its heart is a series of valleys (dales) cutting through an uplifted button of mountains (fells). This is a glaciated landscape where retreating ice more than 15,000 years ago scooped deep hollows in the valley floors. Filled by becks and rivers the hollows became the lakes we know today. Much of the region forms England's largest National Park.

This guidebook explores some of the best of the Lake District countryside. It includes 50 themed walks of between 2 and 10 miles, each with fascinating background reading. The routes are colour-coded from easy strolls to more challenging walks making selection easy. There are clear, easy-to-follow route descriptions, including detailed sketch maps, for every walk. Information on what to look out for during the walk and places to eat and drink is provided, including what to see in the area while you're there and guidance for dog owners on where to walk and dog-friendly establishments. The book also has some full-page colour photographs of locations visited on some of the walks.
