South Downs Way National Trail Guide

South Downs Way National Trail Guide

by: Paul Millmore
The 100 miles (160km) of the South Downs Way are a particularly attractive National Trail, for the walker, the horse rider or the mountain biker. Following the spacious chalk downland that sweeps from the pleasant south coast seaside town of Eastbourne to the ancient cathedral city of Winchester, it offers fabulous views, a magnificent sense of solitude, and at the same time easy transport connections. There are plenty of sights to see, from the pretty Sussex village of Alfriston to Cissbury Ring Iron Age fort, not to mention the sudden colourful flash of a hang glider serenely soaring above Devil's Dyke.

This is the complete official guide for the long distance walker or the week-end stroller and contains all the information you need. The route is split into convenient sections, each with Ordnance Survey 1:25000 scale maps marked with points of special interest. Also included are instructions for circular routes off the Trail for shorter walks, enabling the walker to explore the local area. There is comprehensive route information on each section, notes on nearby features and the book is lavishly illustrated with colour photographs throughout.

To make the journey even more interesting there is background information on local history, wildlife, archaeology, geology, industry and land use. Practical information includes details of public transport, villages on or near the route with facilities for walkers, useful organisations and accommodation including camping sites.

The chapter sections of the route are as follows:
Eastbourne to Alfriston - 10.5 miles
Alfriston to the A27 crossing - 13.75 miles
