Walks in the Borders (South) Using Buses and Trains Guidebook

Walks in the Borders (South) Using Buses and Trains Guidebook

by: Les Lumsdon and Mike Ledlie
The borderlands between England and Wales, also known as Y Mers or the Welsh Marches, is a rich and diverse landscape that offers a wonderful range of walks; from sylvan river valleys to high hills crowned with historic hill forts and burial grounds of the early settlers. The history and culture of the borderland is writ large on the landscape and that is one of its endearing features, for change has been slow in these parts.

The book includes walks from Craven Arms in Shropshire into the southern Marches, the counties of Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire and dipping into Powys. This is a landscape that includes wild moorland, the Black Mountains, and the shapely summits of Hay Bluff, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. It is also one which has dozens of beautiful rivers: Teme, Lugg, Arrow, Monnow, Usk and Wye.

The twenty walks are all linear, allowing a greater distance and variety of scenery to be experienced. To avoid concern about missing a return bus all the walks begin with a bus or train journey allowing you to walk back to your car without worry about time. Links to timetable websites is included. Each walk has an overview summary and start location information. Detailed route finding instructions include a sketch map. A linear walk can often seem more satisfying, and this book enables you to undertake them conveniently.
