Walking Close to the Dukeries Guidebook

Walking Close to the Dukeries Guidebook

by: Clive Brown
One of a range of 'no frills' local walking guide booklets which admirably achieve their objective of getting you out in the countryside amongst beautiful scenery on carefully chosen routes full of interest. The directions are clear and precise and the pencil drawn sketch maps are particularly attractive as well as practical.

The Dukeries takes its name from the cluster of stately homes south of Worksop; Clumber Park, the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Newcastle; Welbeck Abbey, home of the Dukes of Portland, and Thoresby Hall, once the seat of the Dukes of Kingston. It was unusual to have the homes of more than one duke in the same county and for the properties to be so close together, the boundaries often joining.

This guide describes twelve varied and interesting circular walks within the Dukeries, the northern part of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The walks are between 5 and 9 miles in length.

The walk locations are:
Lindrick Dale, South Anston - 6 miles
Market Warsop and Church Warsop - 7.5 miles
Hardwick and Spitfire Hill - 5.75 miles
Clumber Park - 6 miles
Broughton Brake, Walesby - 6.75 miles
Cresswell Crags, Cresswell - 9.25 miles
Chequer Bridge, Ranby - 4.75 miles
Swinston Hill Wood, Woodsetts - 7.25 miles
Hanger Hill Drive, Edwinstowe - 7.5 miles
Pleasley Vale, Shirebrook - 5.25 miles
Rhodesia and Shireoaks - 5.5 miles
