Walking Close to Rutland Water Guidebook

Walking Close to Rutland Water Guidebook

by: Clive Brown:
One of a range of 'no frills' local walking guide booklets which admirably achieve their objective of getting you out in the countryside amongst beautiful scenery on carefully chosen routes full of interest. The directions are clear and precise and the pencil drawn sketch maps are particularly attractive as well as practical.

This guide focuses on the around Rutland Water with ten varied and interesting circular walks, mainly about 6 miles in length. Rutland, historically England's smallest county lost 3% of its land area with the creation of Rutland water in the mid-seventies. It has since become a haven for wildlife, particularly wildfowl. The jewel in its crown is the recent return of the osprey to England; although they have experienced problems breeding and still have only a precarious hold on their territory.

The walk locations are:
Manton, Brooke and Egleton - 6.5 miles
Lyndon and Lyndon Wood - 4 miles
Manton, Preston and Wing - 5.5 miles
Manton, Brooke and Martinsthorpe Lost Village - 5 miles
Whitwell, Cuckoo Spinney and Empingham - 7.5 miles
Exton and Fort Henry Lake - 4.5 miles
Braunston in Rutland - 6 miles
Braunston in Rutland and Prior's Coppice - 4.5 miles
