Walking Close to Peterborough Guidebook

Walking Close to Peterborough Guidebook

by: Clive Brown
One of a range of 'no frills' local walking guide booklets which admirably achieve their objective of getting you out in the countryside amongst beautiful scenery on carefully chosen routes full of interest. The directions are clear and precise and the pencil drawn sketch maps are particularly attractive as well as practical.

This guide focuses on the River Nene near Peterborough with eleven varied and interesting circular walks, mainly about 6 miles in length. Because of its close proximity to the flat featureless fens Peterborough is very underrated as walking country. The walks vary from the semi-urban to completely rural, from the leisure orientated Ferry Meadows to working farmland. The Nene Way is a national waymarked path running from Badby, close to the source of the river all the way to the mouth north of Wisbech. It keeps close to the river all the way between Wansford and Peterborough and this book uses parts of the path within the circular routes.

The walk locations are:
Milton Park, South Bretton and Castor - 5.75 miles
Ailsworth and Sutton Crossway - 4.5 miles
Castor Hanglands from Ailsworth - 6 miles
Northborough and Maxey - 5.75 miles
Sutton, Ailsworth, Castor and Blind Lane - 8 miles
Castor and Splash Dike - 2.5 miles
Ferry Meadows, Landy Green Way and Alwalton - 4.5 miles
Ferry Meadows Country Park - 4.5 miles
Orton Mere - Bluebells and Boardwalks - 6 miles
Peterborough, Stanground Lock and Back River - 6.25 miles
Whittlesey and King's Dike - 5.75 miles
