On a fine day, no matter what the season, there is nothing quite like a walk country, followed by a hearty meal in a good local pub or café. The twenty circular walks in this volume vary in length from 2.5 to 7 miles and are enjoyable all year round. The author has divided the routes into seasons to show each at its very best: whether it be a woodland cloaked in the warm, golden colours of autumn; the crisp, clear views of a winter landscape; a fragrant carpet of bluebells nodding in a gentle spring breeze; or the lush tapestry of wildflowers in a summer meadow.

Each walk is described in detail, with information on points of interest that are likely to be seen along the way. They give the walker the chance to explore the glorious countryside of Essex throughout the year. The book includes colour photographs and sketch maps plus practical information on distance, terrain, map references, and getting to the start.

There are walks over Langdon Hills and Danbury Common; beside the peaceful waters of the River Cam and the River Stour; through shady woodland at Great Sampford and Epping Forest; and around charming villages such as Stebbing and Little Braxted. There is also the opportunity to visit Layer Marney Tower near Colchester, the impressive Coalhouse Fort at East Tilbury, the Naze Tower at Walton-on-the-Naze and, of course, Flatford Mill, featured in many famous paintings by John Constable.
