Dales High Way

Dales High Way Walking Route Guide

Dales High Way Walking Route Guide

by: Tony and Chris Grogan
This book is a detailed, practical and colourful guide to the ninety-mile long distance walk across the glorious high country of the Yorkshire Dales. The route starts from Saltaire in West Yorkshire and crosses some of the finest and most spectacular scenery the Dales has to offer, finishing at Appleby-in-Westmoreland in the lush Eden Valley. The return journey is made on the famous Settle to Carlisle line - the most beautiful railway in England.

The route covers some of the most beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales from the darkly mysterious Rombalds Moor, with its Stone Age rock art, to the dramatic limestone scars of Malhamdale. It meanders along the banks of the river Ribble, where in autumn salmon can be seen leaping up the waterfalls of Stainforth Force, and passes the isolated splendour of Sunbiggin Tarn. It climbs mighty Ingleborough and in a breathtaking six-mile ridge walk crosses the velvety fold of the Howgill Fells.

The guide contains large scale coloured maps for every two to four miles of the route, and these are full of detailed helpful directions. Many interesting photographs and informative descriptions of the history, geology and the culture of the area are included. The guide suggests walking the route in 8 day stages which are as follows:

Saltaire to Ilkley - 7.5 miles
Ilkley to Skipton - 11.4 miles
Skipton to Malham - 12.9 miles
Malham to Stainforth - 10.3 miles
Stainforth to Chapel-le-Dale - 11.6 miles
Chapel-le-Dale to Sedbergh - 15.7 miles
Sedbergh to Newbiggin-on-Lune - 10.9 miles
Newbiggin-on-Lune to Appleby - 12.7 miles
